The M4 Command and Control Vehicle (C2V) is a command post vehicle of US origin. It was developed in the mid 1990's to replace the M577 series of command post vehicles in US military service. The M4 C2V was to be more mobile, larger and better equipped. With funding allocated to other projects only a limited number of these vehicles were produced.
The M4 C2V is based on the M993 chassis of the M270 MLRS multiple rocket launcher. This type of chassis shares many automotive parts with the Bradley series of mechanized infantry fighting vehicles. The superstructure at the front seats three people. The command post module is fitted at the rear flatbed. An APU is fitted for power supply without the main engine running. The command post module features various types of communications gear and maps. A satcom module and a 10 m telescopic mast are fitted. The M4 C2V is unarmed.
The tracked chassis provides good all terrain mobility. This allows the M4 C2V to keep up with mechanized forces. Although the maximum speed and range are comparable to the M577, the off road performance is better. The increased space allows the M4 C2V to carry out operations within the vehicle that would required setting up a tent in the M577. This makes relocating the M4 C2V much faster. The telescopic mast can be lowered or raised in 30 seconds.
The aluminum hull protects the crew from small arms fire and shell splinters. An NBC system is fitted as standard. Survivability is also increased by the improved tactical mobility. By moving the M4 C2V around more often than the older M577, it is less likely to be targeted by air strikes or artillery.
The US Army had a requirement for 439 vehicles. This requirement was postponed and later cancelled. During the early production run a total of 25 vehicles were produced. These were to be sold or converted to ambulances at first, but 15 were put into service in their intended role. The remaining 10 are stored for spare parts.
The M4 C2V was developed to replace the ageing M577 series of command post vehicles. The M577 is a smaller vehicle based on the ubquitous M113 armored personnel carrier.
